I went in to this expecting it to be entertaining, but not much in the sense of a movie. It was probably going to be just a no-thought-needed summer film. Well, I was kind of right and kind of wrong.
There wasn't really anything spectacular about this third installment of the Ice Age franchise but it was definitely up to par with the other two films. The first of the trilogy is of course the best. It has the better script and when you meet the characters for the first time their uniqueness draws you to them. Sid the Sloth (voiced by John Leguizamo) is my favorite of the characters. By the time we get to the 3rd movie, the characters have grown on us, so that aspect of the first film is lost.
Seeing as it's now all about the story, the writers definitely overcame what could have been a disaster. The movie followed all of the rules as far as peril and adventure for a family film, and I'm pretty sure I've seen the same story at least a billion times, but they kept it fresh with some good one-liners and some memorable computer animation effects. The movie wasn't brilliant and isn't going to be considered groundbreaking (Pixar already claimed that title), but there isn't really anything bad to say about it either. It was a funny, endearing family film. Out of most of the summer popcorn movies, this on doesn't feel like you've spent too much money on a crap film.
