Is it a love story? No.
The movie actually starts off with the line: "This is a story of boy meets girl. But, you should know up front, this is not a love story."
It is a story, however, about finding true love.
The movie follows Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who seems to be getting more awesome as his career grows) as he falls in and out of love with Summer (Zooey Deschanel, playing herself, I'm pretty sure) over the course of 500 days.
The movie weaves in and out of the span of time in an interesting Memento-esque way, showing the whole story in pieces, instead of front to back.
Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel have an incredible chemistry between the two. Both of their characters are so relatable as real people, and the events and emotions that are clearly painted on the screen create this world where you feel everything they feel. Director Marc Webb has found the perfect canvas to incite every emotion involved in falling in love...and out.
From the creative use of many different types of cinema (even an incredible split-screen scene that left me speechless), the incredible soundtrack (featuring the amazing Regina Spektor) and outstanding performances all around, (500) Days of Summer is one of the MUST SEE movies of the year.
