Definitely one of the more underrated movies of the year, Adventureland is a comedy by the director of Superbad featuring, yet again, a cast of mostly unknowns (or those on the brink of stardom) with a few well known faces thrown in.
The movie follows James (Jesse Eisenberg, channeling his best Michael Cera) as he struggles through his last summer at home before college working at the local amusement park, Adventureland. Between new friends (Ryan Reynolds and Margarita Levieva lead the pack), his bosses (hilariously played by Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig), he also meets a new love, perhaps even his first love (Twilight's Kristen Stewart).
The comedy isn't quite as laugh-out-loud as Superbad, but in essence that's not a bad thing. This movie was a little more heartfelt in the fact that it really is mostly about teenage love and not quite so much about being a good buddy flick. I was, however, expecting a few more laughs.
With its awesome 80's soundtrack and incredible throws to tourist traps and the people that make them worthwhile, Adventureland was a pleasant surprise in the day and age of stupid humor and not enough originality.
It's now on DVD, so definitely put this at the top of your "need to rent" list.
