Sam Mendes is one of my favorite directors. And I count every single one of his movies as favorites. Even last year's heartbreaking Revolutionary Road was panned by some for being so depressing, but I found it so honest and Kate Winslet's performance was completely incredible. I think her Oscar would have been better suited if it was for that film.
In his newest film, Mendes takes on the road trip comedy and puts his own touch to it. Away We Go follows Burt (John Krasinski) and Verona (Maya Rudolph) as a newly pregnant couple who leave their trailer life to find a better location to raise their expanding family. After making stops in different locations visiting the ones they loved, they ultimately find out what their idea of family truly is.
The performances are incredible, as Rudolph especially drifts from her roots as a performer on "Saturday Night Live". Hers and Krasinski's performances are definitely award worthy. The supporting characters are just as juicy, with Allison Janney and Maggie Gyllenhaal practically stealing the spotlight in their respective scenes.
Definitely worth renting. I'm actually going to buy this one. Top notch performances. Incredibly original script. Phenomenal soundtrack.
