Considered the first honors of the awards season, the 22nd annual Gotham Independent Film Awards were held tonight in New York City. Hosted by Mike Birbiglia and featuring appearances by an array of talent (Amy Adams, John Krasinski, Oliver Platt, Matt Damon, Willem Dafoe, and others), the awards celebrate independent film, plus give smaller films a head start towards the Oscar season. There were a few surprises (much like there were when the nominees were announced and Beasts of the Southern Wild wasn't present in the list of Best Feature nominees), most notably with Moonrise Kingdom triumphing over the likes of The Master, officially moving it up in the seemingly close Oscar race this year.
Here's a complete list of winners.

Best Documentary - HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE
Best Ensemble Performance - YOUR SISTER'S SISTER
Breakthrough Director - Benh Zeitlin, BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD
Breakthrough Performance - Emayatzy Corinealdi, MIDDLE OF NOWHERE
Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You - AN OVERSIMPLIFICATION OF HER BEAUTY
