The third studio album by bestselling Australian band Hillsong United is a tour de force showcasing their growth in quality and musical stylings. The band was originally formed as a youth worship band branch of the world-known Hillsong music brand. After 8 live albums, Hillsong United began embarking on studio recordings.
The band is known for their relevant sound and strong alternative/indie inspired lyrics and music, putting them at the forefront of band music, as well as worship music. The songs don't necessarily lend themselves to the typical "Christian" sound and venture more into modern aesthetics and reinventing sounds. Sadly, with the state of Christian and worship music, Hillsong United has fallen victim to being labeled in the same breath as their adult counterpart, when in reality, the band is much more. Their sound is groundbreaking and their live shows are even more incredible. Their sound isn't one to be missed. It's rare for Christian bands to make the type of impression Hillsong United makes. (Their last 3 albums have all charted in the Top 10 on iTunes mainstream charts.) I think it's safe to begin referring to them more as a band who happens to be full of Christians.
Zion, which is currently streaming for free on iTunes, is an even bigger step forward for the band than ever before. It helps that the band's leader, Joel Houston, has moved from the shores of Sydney to downtown New York. The band has taken on more of its own image, completely (and finally) separating itself. The music also lends itself to both the worshipper and the music listener. The songs are independently unique and beautifully orchestrated, while also being an incredible full package. The lyrical depth audiences have come to know and expect is also present here. While it will take a few listens to find the songs that will undoubtedly stick out for future years, like "Hosanna" or "With Everything", the album is still a masterpiece and deserves a lot of recognition.

I've been a big fan of the band for a long time and I've seen them live twice, the second of which is possibly the best live music experience I've ever had. With the release of Zion hitting next Tuesday, February 26, I'm offering a chance for you to win a copy!
