Now confirmed by HBO, The Sopranos star James Gandolfini has passed away at the age of 51 from a reported heart attack. The actor was in Italy on vacation. He leaves behind his wife Deborah Lin and a son from his first marriage.

A veteran character actor, Gandolfini stole scenes in many big films such as Get Shorty, Crimson Tide, and True Romance. It was his role as mob boss Tony Soprano in HBO's The Sopranos that put his name on the map. The actor was nominated for 6 Emmy's for role, winning three times.

More recently Gandolfini has had appearances in a handful of films, including In the Loop, The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3, and Where the Wild Things Are. Last year he co-starred with Brad Pitt in Killing Them Softly. He most recently wrapped the film Animal Rescue with Tom Hardy.

More details are sure to come, but this is a sad, unfortunate ending to a great career.
