Paul Greengrass' Captain Phillips has been announced as the opening night film for the 51st New York Film Festival on September 27. This will also serve as the film's world premiere.

Starring two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips tells the harrowing true life story of the Somali pirate hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama in the Indian Ocean. Hanks will star as the ship's Captain Richard Phillips.

The picture is poised to be an awards contender this year. Greengrass was nominated for Best Director for his 9/11 masterpiece United 93 and reached high acclaim for his tenure as the director of the 2nd and 3rd entries of the Bourne series. Hanks received back-to-back Oscars for Best Actor for his work in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump.

Captain Phillips also stars Catherine Keener and four first-time Somali actors: Barkhad Abdi, Faysal Ahmed, Barkhad Abdirahman, and Mahat M. Ali. The film opens in theaters on October 11.
