INDUSTRY NEWS

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences made a history-making announcement Tuesday evening after electing Cheryl Boone Isaacs as the new Academy president. She becomes the first African-American president, as well as only the third woman.

Boone Isaacs has plenty of experience in Hollywood, having spent years as a marketing executive at studios such as New Line and Paramount. She joins an esteemed list of women as an Academy president after actress Bette Davis and screenwrite Fay Kanin.

The previous Academy president was Hawk Koch. Boone Isaacs has been a member of the Academy's board for over 20 years as a representative from the public relations branch. She has been a part of the team behind films such as The King's Speech, The Artist, and Precious.

Her first day on the job was spent announcing a new branch to the board of governors. The new Casting Directors Branch is a big step for casting directors in Hollywood. While Boone Isaacs has said that an Casting Director Oscar isn't likely in the near future, it does open the Academy to a broader, relevant future.

Boone Isaacs' next order of business will be assisting in selecting the producers behind next year's Oscars telecast.
