The nominees for the 23rd Gotham Independent Film Awards were announced this morning. After the Hollywood Film Awards (which took place last week), the Gotham Awards are the first precursor awards to announce their nominees each year.

This year's nominees include a wide variety of large and small films, with a few notable absences. Gravity, currently the number one film in the world, didn't make the cut because the Gotham Awards are focused on independently financed film project. A few smaller films that are likely to get shut out in the bigger races, like The Spectacular Now and Short Term 12, however, do get a chance to shine with their nominees.
