thoughts//THE 12 DAYS OF (KATHRYN'S FAVORITE) CHRISTMAS (SONGS): DAY 8

BY KATHRYN GARVIN

On the 8th day of Christmas, this is my favorite song:

Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee

A Christmas staple, am I right? (Yes, I am.) This is a song that you just have to hear at Christmas and if you don't, I think it's actually a crime? I don't know, I guess I'd have to check. This is a song that you hear every Christmas, for several reasons, the first and most important being it's good and also it's fun. Who doesn't want to rock around a Christmas tree?

Again, this song fits my criteria of being danceable. It's also featured in one of my favorite Christmas movies, Home Alone. Kevin makes it look like there's a rockin' party at his house using nothing but a few strings, some mannequins (Where the heck did he get them? Who just has mannequins lying around the house? I certainly don't, and I bet you don't either.) and this song. Brenda Lee (sort of) saved his life! So not only is this a fun song to dance to, it's the perfect song to play if you're tricking the Wet Bandits into thinking you're not a ten-year-old who is...Home Alone. (I am very pleased with myself for that.)

It's also been covered by a ton of other talented artists, and even artists who are only kind of talented! The Partridge Family, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Hanson (!!!SNoWeD iN!!!), Green Day (more like Red and Green Day, am I right? Oh, I'm not?), Hannah Montana (RIP), Chicago, and duh, Glee, to name just a few. Since it's been covered within the last few years, I have to wonder: What is our "new old-fashioned way" of dancing? Twerking? Gangam Style? I need to know if I'm going to rock around my Christmas tree correctly. This song came up on my 'NSync Pandora station the other day and I was home alone (totally unintentional, I swear, just a very happy coincidence) and I had a great time rockin' near (I couldn't get around it) the Christmas tree. Fun at parties and fun when you're alone. A two for one deal here, people.

I didn't mean to talk about Home Alone so much, but these things happen around Christmas!

Have a Rockin' Christmas!
