On the 7th day of Christmas, this is my favorite song:

Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord by Boney M

I'm not sure how or why my mother had a German/British/Caribbean/Jamaican band's Christmas CD, but listen, it brought me this song, so I'm not complaining. Just a little confused.

They start us off with a nice, rich, a capella chorus. Then you're transported to the islands, and you get to hear the story of Jesus' birth. It's good news and it's delivered in close harmonies. What more could you ever ask for? But you live an abundant life, my friend, because you get so much more out of this song! You get a nice chorus of hums that are pretty relacing. It's like being in Jamaica, I assume. I wouldn't know since I've never been. But wait, what's that? An interlude backed by synthesizers! THEN, you get to hear the "Oh My Lord" part, so you're actually getting two songs for the price of one.

Chalk it up to nostalgia, but I love this song. I really do. It literally fills me with joy, friends. It's so good. It's weird, but so good. AND, they made a music video, and it's so magical! Seriously.

As I write this and listen to the song, I realize that probably not that many people have heard of Boney M, or this song. But that's okay, because now you have! And now you get to share in the joy of knowing this song in all its 1980s glory.

Merry Christmas from Boney M!
