winners//2013 L. A. FILM CRITICS ASSOCIATION AWARDS

AWARDS COVERAGE

After a strenuous voting session, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association couldn't make up their minds in a couple of categories, leaving us with more than one tie. Most notable is the Best Film tie that went to Gravity and Her. The critics groups are all over the place this year (as opposed to last year when Zero Dark Thirty and Les Miserables were winning everything) and films like Gravity and Her are really mixing things up. Many awards prognosticators are still betting on 12 Years a Slave for the Oscar, but Alfonso Cuaron's space thriller could prove worthy. Spike Jonze's Her is the real surprise as of late. The quirky drama is the frontrunning underdog after picking up the National Board of Review's Best Film prize last week and now tying for the L.A. critics award. The other award that was somewhat nice to see was James Franco's win as Best Supporting Actor for Spring Breakers. Could this be the start for a serious Oscar campaign? Hope so.
