winners//2013 NY FILM CRITICS CIRCLE AWARDS

AWARDS COVERAGE

The New York Film Critics Circle Awards have been handed out since 1936 making this year's ceremony it's 79th parade of trophies. The Oscar race is officially in full speed as films other than the two Oscar frontrunners, 12 Years a Slave and Gravity, continue to win top prizes at the smaller affairs.

The NYFCC meets and votes each year on the winners of each prize cleverly announcing each winner as they are chosen.

This year's winners definitely help the Oscar chances for David O. Russell's  American Hustle as the film picked up the Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Lawrence), and Best Picture. 12 Years a Slave's Steve McQueen received the Best Director prize. Gravity was completely shut out after not garnering a single award.

The NYFCC Awards do shed some light on the Oscar list to be released in January, though the awards don't always match up. Last year Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty was a big hit with the group, winning Best Picture, while Argo went on to win the Oscar.
