winners//2014 INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS

AWARDS COVERAGE

The last of the major awards handed out before tonight's Academy Awards, the Independent Spirit Awards celebrate the achievements in independent cinema. While indies have become increasingly popular in the past 20 years, the Spirit Awards have become the last look at what could possibly happen at Hollywood's biggest night. Current Best Picture frontrunner 12 Years a Slave had an impressive evening, walking away with a handful of big awards. While this could mean it has the Oscar in the bag, Gravity wasn't eligible for the Spirit Awards since it is not an indie. The same could be said about American Hustle's prospects, since it too was left out of the Spirit Awards, but I think the David O. Russell film is struggling to keep momentum at the Oscars on its own.
