nominees//22nd SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS

AWARDS COVERAGE

While the critics awards are noteworthy, and could help drive the awards potential for certain titles or performances, the Screen Actors Guild Awards mark the first major industry awards to announce their nominees, solidifying a few names in the race and allowing the awards pedigree of a number of projects to truly flourish.

Netflix's Beasts of No Nation showed up quite respectfully, earning nods for Ensemble Cast and Supporting Actor (Idris Elba). The beloved Helen Mirren earned a nod for Supporting Actress for Trumbo, a role that has earned her awards buzz this season, and a Leading Actress for her turn in Woman in Gold, perhaps the awards' most head-scratching choice.

Straight Outta Compton received a much-deserved Ensemble Cast mention. Could this mean its Oscar chances are more solid? And, young Jacob Tremblay could follow the footsteps of child actors before him and make his way to the Oscars' red carpet after a Supporting Actor nod for Room.

Noticeably absent from a single mention, The Martian could potentially end this film season as a box office juggernaut. While the Golden Globes could shake things up tomorrow with their nominees, the lack of support from the actors branch (which makes up the largest group of Academy voters) could be a glimpse at the fate of the film by Ridley Scott in the future.

The 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards are set for January 30, 2016, at the Shrine Exposition Center.
