winners//2016 NATIONAL BOARD OF REVIEW

AWARDS COVERAGE

Voted on each year, for the past 107 years, by a group of film enthusiasts, academics, students, and film professionals, the National Board of Review's awards act as a great balancing act of which films are really on the cusp of deserving awards attention. The films that either win awards or make it on the group's prestigious Top Ten list are usually mixed with critically-acclaimed Oscar bait and under-the-radar, surprising picks. This was the point, last year, when it became obvious that Mad Max: Fury Road was more than just a summer blockbuster.

This year's list of recognition is spread out among notable films, including Manchester by the Sea, named Film of the Year, and Moonlight. Current Oscar favorite, La La Land, failed to pick up any individual mentions, but did round out the Top Ten list.

The awards also mark the first major mention this season for Martin Scorsese's Silence, a film earning lots of anticipated buzz, despite having yet to be seen.

The group will host a gala celebrating this year's winners on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 in New York.
