nominees//23rd SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS

AWARDS COVERAGE

This morning, the Screen Actors Guild announced its nominees for the 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards, one of the most important precursors to the Academy Awards as the acting branch of the Academy is the largest and the SAG Awards generally reflect that branches eventual choices.

While the nominees can be somewhat of a glimpse at the future of the awards race, in light of today's surprise inclusions and exclusions, the nomination portion of the SAG Awards is comprised of a small, randomly selected portion of the entire Screen Actors Guild. This means the choices can sometimes feel out of nowhere.

That being said, it was still a great morning for bubbling frontrunners like Manchester by the Sea, which received the most nominations.

As for surprises, Captain Fantastic is looking to be a major contender for star Viggo Mortensen, who received a Golden Globe nod earlier this week and follows up with a nomination here. Hidden Figures should be safely assumed to be among the eventual Best Picture nominees for Oscar.

Emily Blunt came out of nowhere, earning a nomination for Best Female Actor for The Girl on the Train. While her performance was heralded back when the film released, it wasn't expected to make it in the awards realm.

La La Land, the perennial favorite for Oscar's Best Picture, saw it's smallest showing at a major awards with only landing nods for stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. While SAG doesn't give a Best Picture prize, its Best Ensemble is generally felt like a similar toast. La La Land's exclusion can somewhat make sense, since the "ensemble" of the film is really just Stone and Gosling. Awards favorite Tom Hanks and his film Sully were also noticeably absent from the list.

The 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards will be held Sunday, January 29, 2017 at the Shrine Exposition Center.
