nominees//74th GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS

AWARDS COVERAGE

Presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globe Awards honor the best in television and film each year. Generally accepted as Hollywood's second biggest night, the Globes tend to be the last frontier on the way to Oscar Sunday.

Previously announced, Meryl Streep will be the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award.

The nominations were announced live from the Beverly Hilton by Don Cheadle, Laura Dern, and Anna Kendrick.

La La Land earned the most nominations, with seven, including Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. The mdoern day musical by director Damien Chazelle is the current frontrunner for the Academy Award. It's stiffest competition, Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea, each received multiple nominations, including Best Motion Picture, Drama.

The most surprising inclusions on the film side were the nominations for Deadpool, including Ryan Reynolds mention in the Best Actor, Musical or Comedy category. Along with him, Jonah Hill's nomination for War Dogs is a shock, as that film was a critical and commercial dud. Warren Beatty's Rules Don't Apply was expected to draw a presence here, but it will settle for a singular nomination for Lily Collins.

As for snubs, the most glaring are the lack of nominations for Clint Eastwood's Sully and its star Tom Hanks, both of which were expected to do well among the HFPA. Also, Martin Scorsese's Silence, a late-comer to the awards talk, failed to get any mentions.

On the television side, newcomers Westworld, Atlanta, and This Is Us turned up in force, all earning Best Series mentions, as well as several acting nominations. Noticeably absent were awards favorites Modern Family, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder.

The 74th Golden Globes will take place January 8, 2017 from the Beverly Hilton, with Jimmy Fallon serving as the show's host.
