predictions//74th GOLDEN GLOBE AWARDS

AWARDS COVERAGE

Hollywood's second biggest night is this Sunday, January 8, 2017. Presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Golden Globe Awards recognize achievement in motion picture and television and are generally regarded as one of the more important stops during the awards season.

While the size of the HFPA and its sometimes unusual choices of nominees and winners keep it from becoming a full sail glimpse at the where the race stands in terms of the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes help raise the profiles of contenders and serve as a practice round for acceptance speeches.

The Oscar race is still a threeway run between La La Land, Moonlight, and Manchester by the Sea, but the Globes should bend towards Damien Chazelle's Hollywood love letter. La La Land is already the most nominated film in Globes history, which should lend towards it having a hefty night, with wins in Picture, Actor, Actress, Director, and Song, plus it could even creep into a few other categories.

Moonlight, a critical awards favorite, should experience a slower night than it has so far this season. While the Barry Jenkins drama received multiple nominations, Manchester by the Sea and, possibly, Mel Gibson's Hacksaw Ridge seem like more HFPA-friendly choices at this point. Mahershala Ali should still pick up the Supporting Actor prize. The only threat there is Jeff Bridges for Hell or High Water.

The 74th Golden Globe Awards air this Sunday, January 8, 2017, at 8:00PM on NBC, live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
