winners//23rd SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS

AWARDS COVERAGE

Actors make up the largest branch of The Academy, which gives the Screen Actors Guild Awards a lot of leverage when it comes to the awards season.

The season's behemoth, La La Land, missed out on an Ensemble Cast nomination (instead getting nods for Male Actor and Female Actor), leaving the night's race between Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea. It would be Hidden Figures that would end up as the night's biggest surprise, winning the Ensemble Cast category.

While La La Land is still favored as the eventual Best Picture winner, Hidden Figures' win here moves it up a notch as a serious contender. Moonlight's chances, however, may officially be stayed.

Denzel Washington's win over Casey Affleck also gives the last leg of the race an intriguing twist.

As for solidifying any categories, The Help co-stars, Viola Davis and Emma Stone, have pretty much sealed the deal heading into Oscar month.

Oscar voting begins February 13th. Tonight's wins will definitely shape the awards season dialogue between now and then.
