predictions//90th ACADEMY AWARDS

AWARDS COVERAGE

(Last Updated: August 16, 2017)

It's August, which means we're less than a month to the official start of the festival season, which then leads right into Oscar season.

Richard Linklater's Last Flag Flying, starring Bryan Cranston and Steve Carrell, has been announced as the opening night film for the upcoming 55th New York Film Festival. The prestigious honor gives it an awards season boost. The starry sequel to the Oscar-winning 1973 film The Last Detail (which won Jack Nicholson his first Academy Award) is generating a fair amount of buzz. It's NYFF premiere will solidify its place, especially for Cranston, who could follow-up his Trumbo nomination with a second.

Also, Cannes hit The Florida Project released its first trailer. While the film has a long way to go to make the Best Picture race, Willem Dafoe is earning the film's most Oscar buzz. Director Sean Baker made a splash previously with his iPhone-shot Tangerine. The Florida Project has a lot of Moonlight vibes and could be the indie hit of the year.

The folks at GoldDerby.com have officially opened their Oscar polls, with Steven Spielberg's The Papers sitting at the top of the Best Picture race right now. The film stars awards favorites Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.

And, lastly, we've started getting images and trailers from end-of-the-year films, like Aaron Sorkin's Molly's Game, starring Jessica Chastain. Many are predicting it might be the project to finally earn the multi-nominee her Oscar. Sorkin, who won previously for his The Social Network screenplay, steps behind the camera for the first time. It could prove a great move, or it could hinder the project. Plus, Yorgos Lanthimos' follow-up to The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, starring Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman, finally has a trailer, and it's incredible.

Predicted nominees are listed below for most categories, with more to be added throughout the season. All categories are now weeded down to 5 predictions, with the exception of Best Picture. Predicted winners are in bold.
