AWARDS COVERAGE

(Last Updated: October 4, 2017)

With the fall festival season over, the scope of awards contenders has greatly changed.

Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water has flown into the conversation after its surprise win in Venice. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri also jumps towards the top after winning the Toronto audience award (a huge signifier of, at least, a Best Pic nomination).

Sally Hawkins could land another acting nomination after receiving huge praise for The Shape of Water. Gary Oldman continues to be the male frontrunner for his turn as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. And, Call Me By Your Name is still an audience and critic favorite.

As for movies floundering a bit, mother! failed to impress with audiences, despite receiving mixed-to-good reviews. It's devastating box office numbers will hurt its chances beyond a possible Jennifer Lawrence campaign (which would still be very hard to pull off).

Battle of the Sexes performed well on the festival circuit, but has yet to really take hold of the mainstream audience.

A few other flicks are sitting somewhere in the middle. Lady Bird earned praise, but could be too small to really make a difference. If 20th Century Women failed to earn much last year, Lady Bird's chances are even dimmer. Dunkirk seems to still be a major possibility, but it could also lose some traction as being a "summer" film. Downsizing has its lovers and haters. And, I, Tonya earned some surprising praise, but its mainstream performance will really dictate where it goes from here.

And, Blade Runner 2049 opens this weekend after an incredible press screening run, earning huge praise, especially for its visuals (this will probably be Roger Deakins year...fingers crossed). The film seems to be collecting the same accolades Mad Max: Fury Road did a few years ago.

Still left to be seen are a plethora of big titles, like Steven Spielberg's The Post and Paul Thomas Anderson's untitled flick starring Daniel Day-Lewis.

Predicted nominees are listed below for most categories, with more to be added throughout the season. All categories are now weeded down to 5 predictions, with the exception of Best Picture. Predicted winners are in bold.
