AWARDS COVERAGE

(Last Updated: December 15, 2017)

It's been quite the week of awards announcements. From a slew of critics prizes, which saw every film from Lady Bird to Blade Runner 2049 pick up Best Picture prizes, to the nominees for the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, this should be the point when the Best Picture race begin to thin out.

Instead, 2017's Oscar race is set to be one hell of a nail-biter. Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird may be the safest bet right now, but even then, Three Billboards is starting to gain momentum, again. Even just trying to lock in the potential nominees is tough. The Big Sick was at one point a sure-fire bet, then it failed to gain traction as the season kicked off. Now, after earning an Ensemble nomination from the SAG Awards, it's back in the conversation.

Call Me By Your Name has a lot of love and praise, but is starting to feel like it may not have the prowess to climb all the way to the top. Steven Spielberg's The Post was quickly becoming the film to beat, but a late-screening schedule for SAG meant the film was entirely shut out from the SAG Awards, meaning it's going to have to work double time to pick up the pace.

And, Get Out, the genre film that's surprising everyone, is sticking around.

The only categories that even remotely seem like locks right now are the Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress races, with Williem Dafoe (The Florida Project) and Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird) expected to win.

The Academy has been releasing the short lists for several categories, like this week's announcement of the 9 films remaining in the Foreign Language race. The short list does not include critical favorites First They Killed My Father nor BPM (Beats Per Minute), effectively shaking up that race, as well.

Predicted nominees are listed below for most categories, with more to be added throughout the season. All categories are now weeded down to 5 predictions, with the exception of Best Picture. Predicted winners are in bold.
