nominees//69th PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS

AWARDS COVERAGE

Shemar Moore and Anna Chlumsky delivered the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations announcement this morning, officially kicking off the television award season.

This year's list of nominees include a plethora of newcomers, both in series and performances. Shows like This Is Us and The Handmaid's Tale garnered multiple nominations, including Best Drama Series accolades.

As predicted, the Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie category is teeming with star power. Nicole Kidman, Jessica Lange, Susan Sarandon, and Reese Witherspoon all picked up nods.

Notably absent from this year's crop is HBO's Game of Thrones. The most recent season was not eligible for awards this year, due to its release date. It's absence definitely played a role in allowing newer fare to creep in.

Snubs on the list include The Americans, The Leftovers, and Netflix's controversial 13 Reasons Why. All three failed to garner Drama Series mentions. HBO's Girls failed to get anything for its final series. What a way to say goodbye. This Is Us's Mandy Moore was left out of the acting categories. And, Winona Ryder was considered a shoe-in for Stranger Things.

Speaking of the hit Netflix show, Shannon Purser, who played fan favorite Barb, earned a Guest Actress nomination, perhaps the day's most surprising and welcome mention on the list.

NBC's Saturday Night Live and HBO's Westworld picked up the most nominations, with 22 nods each (including in technical categories). Stranger Things and Feud: Bette and Joan followed with 18 nominations.

As for networks or platforms, HBO led the group with 110 total nominations, followed by Netflix (with 91) and NBC (with 60).

The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Stephen Colbert, will air LIVE from the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles on September 17, 2016 on ABC.
