winners//74th VENICE FILM FESTIVAL AWARDS

AWARDS COVERAGE

Though Sundance and Cannes are important precursors, its the fall festival season that really begins to shape the awards season. Last year saw La La Land's incredible rise to the front after it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (which is currently underway), plus premieres at Telluride and the Venice Film Festival kickstarted campaigns.

This year is no different, though much of the season's clout is already showing up at both of those latter festivals, with Battle of the Sexes barreling into the Best Picture race from Telluride and Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water steamrolling into the conversation, as well.

Del Toro's period drama, starring Sally Hawkins and Octavia Spencer, was awarded the Venice Film Festival's Golden Lion, the equivalent to a Best Picture prize.

When the film premiered last week, it was met with a largely positive response from festival-goers.It was the director's first time submitting a project into the festival. The film's win marks the first ever for a Mexican director.

Other prizes went to Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which won the Best Screenaply prize; Hannah, which won Charlotte Rampling the Best Actress award; and, Jusqu'a La Garde, which won both Best First Film and Best Director for Xavier Legrand.

The 74th Venice Film Festival's jury was headed by Annette Bening.
