nominees//33rd FILM INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS

AWARDS COVERAGE

The throes of the awards season are upon us and if any awards presentation has become a precursor to the Academy Awards, it's the Film Independent Spirit Awards.

The celebration of independent cinema has lead to each Best Picture Academy Award winner for the past four years, including champions 12 Years a Slave, Birdman, and last year's Moonlight.

This year, the nominees include a range of heavily buzzed about films like Call Me By Your Name and Lady Bird. Both films have become the season's smaller films with the most traction thanks to successful festival runs. Call Me By Your Name started earlier with a screening at Sundance. Lady Bird had its first views in Toronto.

Box office success Get Out earned several nominations, confirming the thriller is an official awards season contender.

The 33rd Film Independent Spirit Awards take place March 3, 2018, under a tent on the beaches of Santa Monica. Nick Kroll and John Mulaney will return as the ceremony's hosts.
