nominees//24th SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS

AWARDS COVERAGE

It's been a busy week in the awards season race, with the Golden Globes announcing nominees on Monday, just hours after a slew of critics awards on Sunday.

Now, the Screen Actors Guild Awards come into play, giving Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri the most push in the race as it garnered the most nominations, including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, the understood "Best Picture" prize offered by SAG.

Voted on by a contingent of SAG, the SAG Awards are a good indicator of some of the major kudos coming towards certain films. Actors make up the largest branch of The Academy, so plenty of support (or lacktherof) at the SAG Awards can signify a lot. The only Best Picture winner to achieve that fete without a SAG ensemble cast award was Braveheart. Last year, many thought La La Land could break that with a Best Picture despite not getting nominated for ensemble at SAG, but we all know how that went.

The biggest surprises include the current last-ditch support for Denzel Washington in Roman J. Israel, Esq. His performance earned him a Golden Globe mention earlier this week, too, but he's been mostly left out of other awards so far. Steve Carell squeaked in with a mention for Battle of the Sexes. And, Armie Hammer was left out for Call Me By Your Name.

The lack of an ensemble nomination for the cast of Call Me By Your Name is a major hit to that film's Best Picture chances. It has long been seen as a frontrunner, alongside Lady Bird, which continues its strong awards season race with three SAG nominations, including ensemble.

The other biggest snub is an ensemble, actor, and/or actress mention for The Post. The film screened late for SAG voters, but it still screened, which means it was in the running and failed to earn mentions for its cast, Tom Hanks, or Meryl Streep. It's still expected to show up with the Academy.

On the opposite side, the ensemble nom for The Big Sick puts it back in the race. The comedy failed to pick up a single Golden Globe nomination, though it's been viewed as a potential Screenplay contender.

On the television side, it's all about Big Little Lies. The hit HBO miniseries earned four nods, including mentions for Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman. Stranger Things and GLOW tied Big Little Lies for the most nominations on the TV side.

The 24th Screen Actors Guild Awards take place January 21, 2018, with Kristen Bell serving as the event's first ever host.
