News // '1917' EXPANDS, TAKING OVER FIRST PLACE FROM 'STAR WARS'

A 2020 title has yet to break into first place this year, so far.

This weekend saw multiple first-run titles release wide, though none were able to catch up to the wide release of 2019's awards-season darling, 1917 (#1). The Sam Mendes-directed war film exploded into first place as it widened beyond New York and Los Angeles, earning $36.5 million along the way.

The film about World War I opened wide the weekend after winning the Best Picture, Drama, award from the Golden Globe Awards. It is expected to earn multiple Oscar nominations, set to be announced tomorrow morning.

Also going from limited release to wide, Just Mercy (#5) wasn't as lucky as 1917. The legal drama, based on a true story, bounced into the Top Five but isn't expected to climb much higher over the next few weeks.

As for brand new titles, Paramount's Like a Boss (#4) didn't quite earn the dollars it was expected to earn, especially considering it stars Tiffany Haddish. The comedy brought in just $10 million and a B CinemaScore. Fox's Underwater (#7), fared even worse, earning just $7 million in its first weekend.

The Oscar nominations should give a boost to a number of titles from 2019, some of which will be reintroduced into theaters in the next couple of weeks, hoping to earn awards season boosts.

Leaving the Top Ten this weekend is 2020's first dud, The Grudge (#12). Also, awards hopefuls Uncut Gems (#11), Bombshell (#13), and the laughable Cats (#16) linger under the Top Ten.

Next weekend, Sony will release the long-awaited comedy/action sequel Bad Boys for Life and Universal will release its iffy family adventure Dolittle.
