Judy earns a Top Ten finish in its first week.
With $20.85 million, Universal's Abominable (#1) opened at the top of the box office. That opening is the highest for an original animated film this year. With an A CinemaScore, it should bode well through the next few weeks until The Addams Family is released.
Universal also claimed the second-place spot with its release of the Focus Features film, Downton Abbey (#2). The film based on the hit TV series earned another $14.5 million in its second weekend, for a domestic total just over $58. million.
Roadside's Judy (#7), starring Renee Zellweger, opened to 461 theaters, earning $3.09 million. The biopic of Judy Garland is expected to be a major awards player for Zellweger. It will continue to expand in the next few weeks.
Leaving the Top Ten are inspirational flick Overcomer (#13) and action-comedy Hobbs & Shaw (#11).
Next weekend, Warner Bros. will likely take the top spot with the sure-to-be-divisive Joker.
