News // 'ALADDIN' WISHES ITS WAY TO THE TOP SPOT FOR MEMORIAL DAY

Avengers: Endgame will cross $800 million this holiday weekend.

As was expected, Disney's Aladdin (#1) soared to first place with an impressive $90.4 million over the weekend and an expected $100 million+ Memorial Day total. Its major debut puts it among the best ever Memorial Day releases of all time.

Disney has banked on its live-action reboots of its animated classics, with 2019 alone bringing about Dumbo (#11), The Lion King, and Aladdin. In the past, its live-action reboots have performed well (with even Dumbo's lackluster performance better than most film's performances).

Critics weren't as kind to Aladdin as audiences were (who awarded the film an 'A' CinemaScore). Instead, they were far friendlier to Booksmart (#6), the teen comedy from first-time feature director Olivia Wilde. The film earned a ton of positive buzz after its debut in SXSW, but it failed to make much of a box office impact. It debuted the lowest of the three major releases for the weekend, earning just $6.5 million. The small debut could be attributed to Annapurna's poor marketing strategy or the fact that Aladdin's market share meant Booksmart and other newcomer Brightburn (#5) had less screens on which to play.

As for holdovers, John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (#2) will cross $100 million by the end of the Monday holiday. Avengers: Endgame (#3) will cross $800 million. And, Detective Pikachu (#4) will hit the $120 million mark.

In limited release, Echo in the Canyon (#29) earned the best overall per-screen average with $51,858 per screen on two screens.

Next weekend, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Ma, and Rocketman will all power the box office as we transition into June.
