Overcomer starts on its way to become a faith-based hit.
The third in a line of political action-thrillers, Angel Has Fallen (#1) surprised with a number one debut that topped expectations. With $21.25 million, the film wasn't quite able to collect the opening of its franchise predecessor, London Has Fallen, which opened to $21.6 million in 2016.
Last weekend's number one, Good Boys (#2), fell to second place with $11.75 million. The film's total now sits at $42 million.
Sony and AFFIRM released faith-based Overcomer (#3) from the Kendrick Brothers, who wrote/directed previous hit Christian films like Facing the Giants. The film, like Angel Has Fallen, overperformed with $8.2 million. The film earned an A+ CinemaScore, which suggests it could continue to climb.
Ready or Not (#6), the weekend's highest-rated film from critics, earned $7.55 million over the weekend and $11 million from its five day performance. The film opened on Wednesday.
In limited release, Brittany Runs a Marathon (#24) opened in five locations with $175,696. The Amazon Studios release will continue to release wide over the next few weeks.
Leaving the Top Ten this week are 47 Meters Down: Uncaged (#11) and Blinded by the Light (#13), both of which just opened wide last week, along with The Art of Racing in the Rain (#14).
Next week, Don't Let Go opens. Labor Day weekend is typically one of the quietest weekends of the year, as people soak up the last weekend of the summer.
