Avatar and Titanic shift to second and third place, respectively.
It finally happened. With Disney and Marvel pushing it closer and closer to the line, Avengers: Endgame finally passed James Cameron's 2009 film, Avatar, to become the highest-grossing film of all time.
As of this past Friday (July 19, 2019), the superhero hit had earned $2.7892 billion, globally. That total was just half a million behind Avatar. Sometime Saturday or Sunday, the film finally surpassed Avatar's $2.7897 billion.
Though Avengers: Endgame did deservedly earn its massive total, it had the backing of a massive franchise in its favor. Both Avatar and Titanic, recent number one placeholders, were original concepts. Also, ironically, thanks to the Disney buyout of 20th Century Fox, Avatar is now a Disney property.
The new Top Ten Highest-Grossing Films of All Time is:
As of July 21, 2019
1. AVENGERS: ENDGAME
4. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS
5. AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
6. JURASSIC WORLD
7. THE AVENGERS
8. FURIOUS 7
9. AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON
10. BLACK PANTHER
That list, and Avengers: Endgame's new total, do not incorporate inflation. If that were taken into account, 1939's Gone with the Wind would still be the number one film of all time.
