News // 'DUMBO' TAKES FLIGHT INTO FIRST PLACE

Despite poor reviews, Tim Burton secures another first place film.

Disney's live-action remake of the classic animated film, Dumbo (#1), didn't quite match expectations, but its $45 million opening weekend is enough to take first place from last weekend's stellar Us (#2).

Dumbo, starring Colin Farrell, Danny Devito, and Eva Green, performed better than other recent Disney live-action films, but fell way below that of bigger cartoon-to-live-action adaptations, like Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast.

This isn't Disney's only similar outing this year. Still to come are the releases of Aladdin and The Lion King.

In its second week, Us brought in $33.6 million, which pushes it well beyond the $100 million mark.

Disney/Marvel's Captain Marvel (#3) also performed well as a holdover. The superhero film has now earned $353 million, domestically.

Pure Flix's Unplanned (#5) performed on par with expectations, bringing in $6.1 million. The anti-abortion drama is not expected to stick around the Top Five next weekend. Its opening weekend was helped by pre-release theater buyouts by churches and religious groups.

The only other wide release of the weekend was Neon's The Beach Bum (#10), starring Matthew McConaughey. The stoner comedy stumbled with only $1.8 million from over 1,000 theaters.

In limited release, Diane (#28) earned $27,043 from three theaters.

Leaving the Top Ten are indie darling Gloria Bell (#11), Spanish-language sequel No Manches Frida 2 (#12), animated flick The LEGO Movie 2 (#13), and disappointing actioner Alita: Battle Angel (#15).

Next weekend, New Line's Shazam! is expected to boom after opening in over 4,100 theaters. Paramount will release Pet Semetary. And, STX has The Best of Enemies, a drama starring Sam Rockwell and Taraji P. Henson.
