Joker officially crosses the $1 billion mark, worldwide.
Fox has an audience-pleasing Oscar contender on its hands as Ford v Ferrari (#1) scored a first-place finish in its opening weekend. The film earned praise from critics but was expected to debut in second place behind Sony's Charlie's Angels (#3) reboot, starring Kristen Stewart. However, that film earned under expectations. With just $8.6 million, the film secured a third-place start, just behind last weekend's number one film, Midway (#2).
Starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale as the real-life duo behind America and Ford's first Le Mans win, Ford v Ferrari earned $31 million on top of an A+ CinemaScore. According to Box Office Mojo, the crowd was 62% male and 79% older than age 25. IT's a similar win that earned Green Book its long-standing box office success last year on its way to a Best Picture win.
Not debuting as well as Ford v Ferrari or Charlie's Angels, WB's The Good Liar (#7) brought in $5.65 million and a B CinemaScore.
The big story, outside of Ford v Ferrari's finish, is Joker's (#8) massive worldwide success. The DC Comics adaptation earned an additional $5.6 million this weekend, domestically, and crossed the $1 billion, internationally. It's the first-ever R-rated film to cross that mark.
In limited release, A24 opened its awards-season hopeful Waves (#25) to a handful of screens, earning a per-theater average of $36,140. The film will continue to widen its release over the coming holiday season.
Leaving the Top Ten this week are box office bomb Terminator: Dark Fate (#11), slasher comedy Zombieland: Double Tap (#13), and animated flick The Addams Family (#15).
Next weekend, Ford v Ferrari will lose its top spot to Disney's Frozen II. Plus, Sony will release A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood as STX opens 21 Bridges.
