Blinded by the Light is another bomb for Warner Bros.
On top of two weeks with Hobbs & Shaw (#2) at number one, Universal takes another weekend win with original comedy Good Boys (#1). The R-rated laugher about 12-year old boys and their hijinks opened to $21 million, domestically.
Good Boys opened in 14 international markets, bringing in $23.1 million, worldwide.
It marks only the third time this year that an original title has taken the top spot.
Universal's previous winner, Hobbs & Shaw dropped to second place, bringing in an additional $14.1 million. The action comedy now sits at over $303 million , internationally.
Sony released The Angry Birds Movie 2 (#4) earlier in the weeke, which may have affected its weekend box office numbers. The animated film received high praise from critics and earned $16.2 million since its release and ust $10.5 million for the weekend. American schools starting the school year could have also affected its numbers.
47 Meters Down: Uncaged (#7) performed the second best of the weekend's newest films. The sequel only earned $9 million, which wasn't enough to break into the Top Five. Warner Bros.'s Blinded by the Light (#10) performed even worse, earning just $4.45 million. The film's dismal opening means Warner Bros. has had two box office bobs release in a row, after last weekend's The Kitchen (#13).
Opening outside the Top Ten, Where'd You Go, Bernadette (#11) marked a miss for Annapurna. The Cate Blanchett-starring vehicle earned just $3.45 million.
Leaving the Top Ten this weekend are box office bomb The Kitchen, superhero hit Spider-Man: Far from Home (#12), animated hit Toy Story 4 (#14), and surprise Top Ten finisher Bring the Soul: The Movie (#23).
Next weekend, Ready or Not could become the next original hit. Plus, Lionsgate will release the sequel, Angel Has Fallen, while Sony will release Overcomer.
