News // 'SPIDER-MAN' REPEATS AS THE WORLD'S NUMBER ONE FILM

The Farewell sets an opening weekend record.

Sony's Spider-Man: Far From Home (#1) took first place in its second weekend, repeating its debut as the world's number one film. Globally, the film has now earned nearly $850 million. Internationally, with $572.5 million, Far From Home is now the highest grossing Spider-Man movie.

In second place, Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 4 (#2) picked up another $20 million. It's now the fifth highest grossing Pixar movie, domestically, in the studio's history.

The best debut this weekend belongs to Crawl (#3), Paramount's alligator thriller. Its $12 million was right on par with forecasts for the weekend. The film received a B CinemaScore, which shows it should carry on decently for another weekend or so.

Not quite as impressive, Disney released Fox's comedy Stuber (#4) to meddling reviews and a lackluster $8 million. Like Crawl, the film earned a B CinemaScore, but its small opening number gives some pause to its future.

A24's The Farewell (#19) is, perhaps, the biggest story this weekend. The film opened to four theaters, earning $351,330. That total means the film starring Awkwafina holds the record for the highest per-screen opening this year, a record Avengers: Endgame (#11) held until now. The indie hit will expand throughout the next weekends ahead of its nationwide opening on August 2nd.

Leaving the Top Ten this weekend are Avengers: Endgame, which had jumped back into the mix last weekend, and Elton John biopic Rocketman (#12).

Opening next weekend is Disney's The Lion King. The photo-realistic retelling of the animated classic is earning mixed reviews, but audiences will surely show up.
