News // 'THE RISE OF SKYWALKER' OPENS TO $175.5M; 'CATS' STUMBLES, EXPECTEDLY

Audiences hate-watched Cats to one of the worst openings of all time.

Disney, once again, took the top spot of the box office. As expected, Star Wars: The Rise of the Skywalker (#1) blasted into its opening weekend with $175.5 million. That amount is the third-highest December opening of all time.

Worldwide, the 'last' Star Wars film earned $373.5 million.

With a B+ CinemaScore and very mixed reviews, The Rise of Skywalkershould still become one of the highest-earning of all Star Wars films.

Typically, studios would steer clear of releasing anything else. But, this time around, Cats (#4) opened wide to over 3m300 locations. With just $6.5 million, domestically, its opening weekend numbers put it among the top twenty worst openings of all time. The film earned mostly negative reviews from critics, but audiences gave it a surprising C+. Many on social media have remarked that the film's negative reviews actually sparked their interests. Videos shared from screenings show audiences taking the film in stride, treating screenings as sing-a-longs or overdoing the fanfare throughout.

Lionsgate expanded Bombshell (#6) into a wide release. The Fox News exposé earned $5 million.

In limited release, Amazon Studios released Invisible Life (#31) to just two locations, earning $8,364.

Leaving the Top Ten this week are awards season hopeful A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (#11), Todd Haynes legal drama Dark Waters (#13), and action flick 21 Bridges (#16).

Next week, the Christmas holiday sees the release of several high profile films, like A24's Uncut Gems, Sony's Little Women, Fox's Spies in Disguise. And, WB will release Just Mercy and Universal will release 1917 in limited release.
