Isle of Dogs and Incredibles 2 lead the pack of feature films from around the globe.
Though it seems like Disney and Pixar have always had a hold of the Best Animated Feature Academy Award since its inception at the 74th Academy Awards in 2002 (Shrek earned the inaugural animation Oscar), that hasn't always been the case. However, this year looks pretty good for the animation legends to take home the gold.
If box office is any indicator, Incredibles 2 will definitely be crowned the winner. The animated film took home over $600 million, officially becoming one of the summer's most prominent blockbusters. If artistry is the key factor, Wes Anderson's Isle of Dogs could be the surprise winner. The film did have its fair share of controversy, but it was mostly liked by critics and bubbled under as an audience favorite, too.
Other films earning the cut as an official Oscar submission include Disney's other hopeful, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Universal/Illumination's Dr. Seuss' The Grinch, and Warner Bros.' Smallfoot.
A few international titles are also among the midst, including Lu Over the Wall, Mirai, and The NIght is Short, Walk on Girl.
The nominations for the 91st Academy Awards will be announced January 22, 2019, with the ceremony being held on Sunday, February 24, 2109.
