News // 71st CANNES FILM FESTIVAL LINEUP HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED

Updated: May 8, 2018

The Cannes Film Festival lineup includes films by Spike Lee and Jean-Luc Godard.

Updated: Includes information regarding the Closing Night film, previously unannounced.

The official selections for the upcoming 2018 Cannes Film Festival were announced today by festival chief Thierry Fremaux.

The fest kicks off next month in France, with a bit of controversy already surrounding it, as Netflix has chosen to remove all screenings from the festival amidst the fest's decision to not allow films to compete that have no French distribution deals.

In Competition films include projects by directors such as Asghar Farhadi, whose Everybody Knows is opening the festival, Spike Lee, Jean-Luc Godard, and David Robert Mitchell.

Many high profile directors expected or anticipated to have showings include Lars von Trier and Alfonso Cuaron. There's no word on if von Trier's The House That Jack Built will be added at a later date, but Cuaron's Roma will definitely be shut out due to the Netflix boycott. Harmony Korine's The Beach Bum wasn't ready in time.

Other notable films left off the list include Claire Denis' High Life, starring Robert Pattinson. The next film from Terrence Malick, Radegund, a WWII period piece, was also expected to make the cut, but wasn't mentioned. Perhaps neither film was ready in time?

Terry Gilliam's much-awaited The Man Who Killed Don Quixote will be the festival's Closing Night film. Gilliam has been working to complete the film for over 20 years.

Cate Blanchett serves as the president of this year's jury. The rest of the jury has yet to be announced. Whichever film wins will join the ranks of other Palme d'Or winners like last year's The Square and other winners like The Tree of Life and Marty (the only film to win the Palme d'Or and the Academy Award for Best Picture).

Films screening out of competition include Ron Howard's Solo: A Star Wars Story. Some were hoping this would be the first stop for Ocean's Eight, starring an A-list cast including Sandra Bullock, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, and jury president Blanchett. It appears that film is bypassing the festival circuit completely on its way to becoming a summer box office hit.

Un Certain Regard films include Valeria Golino's Euphoria and Luis Ortega's El Angel.

Special screenings include Wim Wenders' Pope Francis - A Man Of His Word. The long-awaited Orson Welles film, The Other Side Of The Wind, was to receive a premiere screening, but it too is a victim of the Netflix boycott.

The 71st Cannes Film Festival runs May 8 to May 19, 2018.
