Alfonso Cuarón's Roma is the current frontrunner.



Per a press release from The Academy, 87 countries have submitted films for consideration in the Foreign Language Film category at the upcoming 91st Academy Awards.


For the first time ever, Malawi and Niger have submitted films.


Last year, A Fantastic Woman from Chile beat out Palme d'Or winner The Square. This year, other Cannes favorites are in the mix, including Palme d'Or winner Shoplifters, from Japan.

The nominations for the 91st Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 22, 2019. The 91st Academy Awards will take place Sunday, February 24, 2019.
