News // ACADEMY ANNOUNCES 26 ANIMATED FEATURE FILMS SUBMITTED FOR THE 90th ACADEMY AWARDS

As the awards season moves along, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will steadily announce its shortlists of contenders for major categories. Last month, they announced a record 92 countries had submitted films for the Best Foreign Language Film category. Today, the group behind the Oscars announced 26 animated features have been officially submitted for the Animated Feature Film category at the 90th Academy Awards.

The press release notes that several of the films that made the list have yet to fulfill their required Los Angeles qualifying run. Before they can move on to the voting process, which opens in January, the film must complete the theatrical release requirement.

This year's awards race marks the first time since the category was introduced to be open to the entire eligible voting membership of the Academy. Previously, only those members in the animation branch were able to vote for the award's recipient.

Nominations for the 90th Academy Awards will be announced Tuesday, January 23, 2018. The 90th Oscars will be held Sunday, March 4, 2018.
