Disney/Pixar's Incredibles 2 crosses $500 million.
2018 is proving to be a great box office year for Disney as its Ant-Man and the Wasp (#1) earned a first place debut. It's the 10th time a Marvel-focused film has landed in first place this year, following the footsteps of Avengers: Infinity War (#15) and Black Panther (#30). The film opened to $76 million, earning $20 million more than its 2015 predecessor did when it opened.
The film did well overseas, as well, earning top marks in South Korea, Mexico, and Indonesia, among others.
Universal's The First Purge (#4) was the other major new release for the weekend. The horror flick earned $17.1 million over the three day weekend, and $31 million for its full run, so far. The fourth installment in the horror franchise opened on Wednesday, hoping to take the once-lucrative 4th of July title.
In limited release, Whitney (#11), the documentary about Whitney Houston, landed just outside the top ten. Boots Riley's Sorry to Bother You (#16), a surprise Sundance hit, opened to 16 theaters, earning over $717,000.
Holdovers from previous weeks included Incredibles 2 (#2), which took the second place spot. The animated sequel now holds the title of the first animated film to ever cross $500 million domestically. This also means the Pixar hit is the all-time highest grossing animated film, too.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (#3), last week's number one, moved down to third place, though it's now crossed over $1 billion worldwide, becoming only the 35th film to ever reach those heights.
Other notable results include Ocean's 8 (#7), which has now crossed $126 million, making it the second highest grossing film in that franchise. And, Won't You Be My Neighbor? (#9), the hit Mister Rogers documentary, took in an additional $2.59 million. It's the highest grossing documentary of the year.
Leaving the Top Ten this week are Sanju (#12) and Solo: A Star Wars Story (#14).
Next weekend sees Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation and Skyscraper bounding into wide release.
