Liu Yifei will star as Mulan in Disney's upcoming live-action version of their hit animated film, Mulan.
Production began on Monday, with filming taking place in China and New Zealand throughout the next few months. Disney has been on a roll lately with live-action versions of hit animated films. Beauty and the Beast was one of last year's biggest hits.
Niki Caro is directing the film following the titular character as she disguises herself as a man to spare her older father from joining the military during a battle against the huns.
Other cast members include Jet Li, who will play the emperor of China, Gong Li who will portray a powerful witch, and Donnie Yen, who will be Mulan's mentor, Commander Tung. Yoson An, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Ron Yuan, and Nelson Lee are also part of the cast.
Barrie M. Osborne, Bill Kong, and Tim Coddington serve as executive producers. Chris Bender, Jason Reed, and Jake Weiner are producers.
The story of Mulan is one of China's most popular folktales. The live-action Mulan will hit theaters on March 27, 2020, following the releases in 2019 of Aladdin and The Lion King.
