The Oscar winner will star as Fred Rogers in a new biopic.
On the heels of the success of this summer's Won't You Be My Neighbor?, a documentary expected to make waves this coming awards season, a new biopic based on the life of Fred Rogers is currently in production and we've got the first look at its star (SEE FULL PHOTO BELOW). Tom Hanks will star as the children's television star, formatively known as Mr. Rogers, in the as-yet-untitled film.
Hanks was named as the star of the TriStar Pictures' film back in January.
In the first on-set photo, Hanks is seen wearing Rogers' infamous red sweater, instantly giving off nostalgic vibes. The film is based on Rogers' friendship with journalist Tom Junod, to be played by Matthew Rhys. Junod's relationship with Rogers began as the magazine writer approached the TV star reluctantly and ended up building a bond, moved by Rogers' kindness and empathy.
Marielle Heller, whose Can You Ever Forgive Me? will release this awards season, is directing the film. Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue wrote the script. Youree Henley, Marc Turtletaub, and Peter Saraf are producing.
The film is set to open wide on October 19, 2019.
