News // 'HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3' BEATS THE ROCK

Indies Sorry to Bother You and Eighth Grade over-perform.

The third entry into the Hotel Transylvania animated franchise, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (#1), debuted on top of the weekend box office with over $40 million. It was enough of a haul to push Disney's Incredibles 2 (#4) out of the top spot, though that animated flick continued to rise up the box office record ranks. This weekend it eclipsed The Dark Knight's total cume to become the 9th largest overall film grosser, domestically.

Last weekend's victor, Ant-Man and the Wasp (#2), dropped 62%. It still ended in second place, a rare dip for a Marvel film.

The weekend's other major release, outside of Hotel Transylvania 3, was Skyscraper (#3), starring Dwayne Johnson. The action flick was highly promoted, but failed to make much of a dent, opening to only $25.48 million. This is Johnson's second sort-of miss for the year after 2018's earlier action flick Rampage came and went without much of a box office total.

In limited release, Sorry to Bother You (#7) finished its second weekend with an additional $4.25 million after expanding to over 800 theaters. That was enough to bump it into the Top Ten. Premiering this weekend to 4 theaters was Bo Burnham's Eighth Grade (#22), a festival smash that is expected to stick around through the awards season. It earned over $252,000 for a per screen average of $63,071, the highest for the weekend and one of the healthiest this year.

Leaving the Top Ten this weekend includes comedy Tag (#12), documentary hit Won't You Be My Neighbor? (#11), and superhero flick Deadpool 2 (#15). Won't You Be My Neighbor? could reenter the mix as it continues to play to great reviews and expands into more theaters.

Next weekend, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again and The Equalizer 2 should prove to be box office hits. Horror flick Unfriended: Dark Web could scare up decent numbers, as well.
