MTV has announced that Jennifer Lopez will receive the 2018 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the Video Music Awards on August 20, 2018, at Radio City Music Hall. Lopez will also perform during the VMAs, her first time since 2001.
The Video Vanguard Award is MTV's version of a Lifetime Achievement award handed out at the VMAs to honor a body of work in music and music videos. Lopez's notable resume includes a career breakout in the early 90's as a Fly Girl on "In Living Color". In years later, she earned a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of Selena in the biopic Selena.
Outside of film, Lopez transitioned into music in 1999 with her album On the 6 and the single "If You Had My Love." The song went to number one, followed by other hit songs like "I'm Real" and "All I Have."
At the VMAs, Lopez has accumulated 23 nominations, including two this year. She's won two awards: Best Dance Video ("Waiting for Tonight") and Best Hip-Hop Video (I'm Real").
Previous recipients of the Video Vanguard Award, renamed in 1991 in honor of recipient Michael Jackson, include Madonna (1986), George Michael (1989), Janet Jackson (1990), Tom Petty (1994), U2 (2001), Britney Spears (2011), Justin Timberlake (2013), Beyonce (2014), and Pink (2017).
