Sandra Bullock and friends pushed Solo: A Star Wars Story out of first place with the newest entry into the Ocean's Eleven canon.
Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow enjoyed the weekend as Ocean's 8 exceeding expectations, coming in first place with $41.5 million and setting a new franchise record. It's a solid opening, but not overwhelming, which means it could or could not have legs to carry it beyond its $70 million budget. The cast is well-regarded, especially its star Bullock, so it could draw an audience beyond the next influx of summer popcorn movies.
A24's Hereditary entered the weekend with strong buzz and huge critical acclaim, but failed to connect with audiences who may have been expecting a more mainstream-friendly horror flick, not an artistic approach. The film earned $13 million, becoming A24's highest opening weekend of all time.
Hotel Artemis, the new action flick starring Jodie Foster, opened in over 2,000 theaters, but bombed with only $3.15 million.
Solo: A Star Wars Story earned enough for second place, but its quick fall is a sign it's already past its buzz phase. Deadpool 2 finished in third with $13.65 million, bringing its total to over $280 million.
Avengers: Infinity War is close to topping $2 billion internationally, after earning another $6.8 million domestically.
In limited release, the much-anticipated Mister Rogers documentary, Won't You Be My Neighbor, opened to 29 theaters with $470k.
Next weekend sees the release of Incredibles 2, the highly anticipated sequel to Disney/Pixar's hit, The Incredibles. Plus, Tag, a based-on-a-true-story comedy with a big ensemble cast.
