The director is the first award recipient announced for this year's Britannia Awards.
BAFTA Los Angeles hosts its annual British Academy Britannia Awards in the heat of awards season. Over the next few months, the recipients of the group's awards will be announced. First up, Steve McQueen will receive the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing.
Viola Davis will present the award during the October ceremony at the Beverly Hilton. Davis stars in McQueen's upcoming Widows.
McQueen will be making the rounds this festival and awards seasons, with Widows premiering at the Toronto Film Festival in September, plus opening the London Film Festival. The film marks McQueen's fourth time behind a feature film, with Best Picture-winner 12 Years a Slave and Shame his tow most recent feature.
