News // 'THE UPSIDE' DEFIES POOR REVIEWS TO WIN THE WEEKEND

Kevin Hart's negative PR didn't keep audiences from seeing the long-awaited drama.

Before celebrating The Upside's (#1) number one finish, the big story of the weekend is definitely Aquaman's (#2) incredible box office haul that now counts beyond $1 billion worldwide. The film now sits just behind The Dark Knight Rises as the highest-grossing films in the DC Comics universe. Aquaman should finally topple TDKR by the end of its run.

The Upside, starring Bryan Cranston, Kevin Hart, and Nicole Kidman, is a remake of the highly-praised French film The Intouchables. Set to be released in 2017, the film was shifted around during the Weinstein scandal, landing at STX and lantern Entertainment, where it was re-edited with director Neil Burger to receive a PG-13 rating, as opposed to its original R rating. On top of the WEinstein scandal affecting the release date, the recent Hart scandal was expected to have palpable effects on the film's release. But, audiences turned out, giving STX its first-ever number one finish.

Also releasing wide, A Dog's Way Home (#3) landed with $11.3 million in its first weekend and Replicas (#13) became the year's first major bomb, earning just $2.5 million. That abismal finish didn't even allow the film, which opened to over 2,3000 locations, to crack the top ten.

On the Basis of Sex (#8) expanded this weekend, earning $6.2 million. Plus, If Beale Street Could Talk (#12) saw its widest release yet, earning $2.38 million.

Leaving the Top Ten this week are Jennifer Lopez vehicle Second Act (#16), animated hit Ralph Breaks the Internet (#14), and comedy bomb Holmes & Watson (#22).

This coming weekend, M. Night Shyamalan's Glass will unseat The Upside for first place as it's the only major wide release and it comes with a large fanbase already anticipating it.
