Nominations // 25th SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARDS

A Star is Born earns the most nominations in film categories.

Bradley Cooper's A Star is Born picked up the most nominations for the 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards, earning four mentions, including Best Ensemble (the appropo 'best film' prize for the SAG Awards). Cooper, Lady Gaga, and Sam Elliott earned individual acting nominations.

The SAG Awards are an important stop during awards season as the nominations and winners are determined by the largest contingent of industry insiders that also make up the Academy. Outside of the SAG Awards, the Producers Guild of America Awards and the Writers Guild of America Awards are equally significant.

Following A Star is Born, BlacKkKlansman and The Favourite earned three nominations.

For those following awards season and looking for how the SAG Award nominations play into Oscar predictions, it's become increasingly difficult for a film to win the Best Picture Oscar without at least a nomination for Best Ensemble at the SAG Awards. In fact, only one film has been able to do that since the SAG Award began: Braveheart. La La Land almost charted the same path, but we all know how that awards season ended.

If that rule is to be followed, A Star is Born may be the new frontrunner for the Oscar.

On the TV side, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Ozark each earned four nominations.

Notable double nominees this year include: Amy Adams (Sharp Objects, Vice), Emma Stone (The Favourite, Maniac), and Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns, A Quiet Place). Sterling K. Brown was also nominated as part of the ensemble casts of Black Panther and This is Us, plus an individual nomination for This is Us.

As for surprise omissions, Regina King has led the Supporting Actress race all season, but failed to pick up a nomination here. Nicole Kidman also failed to secure a nod for her work in Boy Erased. Netflix's Roma didn't earn a single nod, as well.

Awkwafina and Laverne Cox joined SAG-AFTRA president, Gabrielle Carteris, in announcing the nominees during a press conference held at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood.

The 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards air live on TNT and TBS on January 27, 2019.

Alan Alda will receive this year's lifetime achievement award.
