Nominations // 28th GOTHAM INDEPENDENT FILM AWARDS

Updated: Nov 27, 2018

First Reformed leads with the most nominations, including a nod for its star, Ethan Hawke.

Awards season is here as the 28th Gotham Awards announced its nominees this morning, kicking off what should be one of the most divisive and full-of-twists season we’ve seen in years. Celebrating independent cinema, the Gotham Awards have become one of the season’s most interesting starting points for awards campaigns. It was with these nominations last year that Get Out became a serious contender.

Voted on by a small committees of film journalists and film critics, the 28th Gotham Awards look to be giving films such as First Reformed and The Favourite some early buzz. Current awards season frontrunner, Roma, wasn’t completed left out, earning a nod for its star, Yalitza Aparicio.

First Reformed, from writer/director Paul Schrader, earned the most nominations, with three, including Best Feature, Actor, and Screenplay. The Favourite followed with two nominations: Feature and Screenplay. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the costume film is already a winner after it was also announced the film’s leading actresses would receive a special jury prize for their ensemble work on the film.

Other films earning notices include Chloe Zhao’s festival favorite, The Rider, Barry JenkinsIf Beale Street Could Talk, and current Oscar Best Actress hopefuls Glenn Close for The Wife and Toni Collette for Hereditary.

The few surprises of the collection of nominations include mentions for Regina Hall in Support the Girls (plus that film’s nomination for Screenplay) and Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance in Where is Kyra?, a film that’s been absent from other awards season chatter.

The 28th Gotham Awards will take place on Monday, November 26, 2018, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City. As previously announced, special career tributes will be given to Willem Dafoe, Rachel Weisz, Paul Greengrass, and Jon Kamen.
